Football Success at Wembley

I am thrilled to report that our Year 6 footballers triumphed in the National Final of the Under 11’s Football League Community Cup.

They travelled all the way to Wembley last Bank Holiday weekend, with their parents, Mr Silvester and Mr O’Brien, to play against Plymouth and emerge as 2-1 winners!!

Every match that they have played, the boys have represented the school with confidence and pride.  They are a wonderful team, with fabulous spirit, and each one of them is superbly talented.  Well done boys, you are absolute stars!

Our Trip to Wembley - by Adam and Max

On Sunday 24th May, 8 boys called Max, Adam, Luke, Mitch. Joe, Charlie, Declan and George went to Wembley.  At 9.30 am we came to school to catch the coach to London.  It took us 2 hours to get to the services and then we had 45 minutes toilet break and some food.  Then it took us another 2 hours to get to London.  When we got there the bus driver took us to the wrong hotel so we had to turn around and get to the right hotel.  When we were there we got unpacked and went down for dinner.  After dinner we went to bed. In the morning we went down for breakfast, and after breakfast we met this woman and she took us to the stadium for a tour.  After the tour we went to the changing room to get changed and warmed up.  Finally at 1.40 we entered the Wembley pitch.  The game got under way but we got off to a shocking start.  Around 2 minutes into the game Plymouth scored a very good goal.  We were 1-0 down at half time. 3 minutes into the second half Joe scored to make it 1-1, but with 3 minutes left Mitch scored an absolute screamer to make 2-1 and we won the cup! We went back to the coach at the hotel and returned back at 10.30pm.

The ‘Wembley Winners’ are: Joe Pugh, Mitchell Thompson, Luke Richards, Max Grashion, George Grashion, Declan Howe, Charlie Allen, Adam Hawkhead.

Pupils book a Wembley date - Doncaster Star - 24 April 2009

A DONCASTER school have booked their place in a prestigious Wembley final after handing out a footballing lesson to rival finalists in the Football League Championship U11s Community Cup Northern Area finals at Nottingham on Wednesday.

Barnby Dun Primary School, playing under the banner of Doncaster Rovers, beat Derby County 6-5 on penalties in the final and will now contest the national final prior to the Championship play-off final at Wembley in front of over 80,000 fans.

They beat Blackpool 1-0, Barnsley 2-0 and drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest to qualify for the semi-finals to take on Wolves, who they beat 2-0.

Eric Randerson, Rovers' Community Manager, said: "This is a great achievement for both the school and the club. We have now had a side in three out of the last four annual Community Cups which is good for the local community.

"It has taken hard work by the teachers, kids and the community coaches to make sure we have competed at this level to make Wembley. The kids will have a fantastic day out at Wembley that they will never forget whatever the score."

The boys Dun good in cup final at Wembley- Doncaster Star - 27/5/09

DONCASTER'S Barnby Dun Primary School, representing Doncaster Rovers, won the Under-11s Football League Community Cup, after beating Bickleigh Primary School, representing Plymouth Argyle, in front of 80,000 at Wembley Stadium in the curtain-raiser to the Championship play-off final.
The team reached the final following their success in the Northern Area finals in Nottingham, where they beat representative teams from Barnsley and Blackpool before emerging victorious over Derby County to reach the final.

Despite going a goal down early on in the game, the work ethic of the team never wavered and it wasn't long before skipper Joe Pugh levelled with a great individual effort.

Mitchell Thompson scored the winner three minutes from time when he put the finishing touches to some impressive build-up play with a superb strike from the edge of the area which brought Wembley to its feet - especially in the end where all the players' friends and families were gathered.

The team managed to hold out for the remaining two minutes to complete a famous victory in Doncaster's third final in the last four years.

"The boys have done fantastic to reach this stage and winning the game was the icing on the cake," said a school spokesman. "The lads have not just been a credit to the school but also a credit to Doncaster.

"I'd also like to thank the parents for their continued support and also all of the staff from Doncaster Rovers."
